Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III slapped the Cleveland Browns with a harsh reality check on the situation they are facing with Baker Mayfield.

The Browns acquired Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans this offseason, signaling the end of Baker Mayfield's time with the team. Cleveland hoped to trade Mayfield in the Watson trade but Houston didn't want him. However, they had hopes they can easily move him after they settled their roster.

Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case. No team wants to trade for Mayfield, and while some franchises have reportedly shown interest, they view the quarterback as a negative asset–meaning Cleveland needs to pay more just to part ways with him.

For RG3, the Browns should have traded Mayfield first before signing Watson. They should have also not engaged in the drama with him that further destroyed his value.

“The Browns needed to trade Baker Mayfield before the ink dried on Deshaun Watson’s contract. Instead, they trashed Baker in the media, aided in killing his trade value and are stuck with a QB they don’t want,” Griffin wrote on Twitter.

Robert Griffin III makes a valid point. After all, you don't say something negative to a player you want to trade since it removes your leverage. Why would teams want to give out assets for a player his own team clearly doesn't want? They could just wait for him to get cut anyway.

Of course the Watson signing doesn't help. The Browns made it clear they don't want Mayfield, which makes it even more difficult to move him with his massive contract.

It remains to be seen what will happen to Baker Mayfield, but it's unlikely the drama will end any time soon.
