The Cleveland Browns fired Freddie Kitchens from his post as head coach on Sunday night after just one season, and now, former college coach Urban Meyer is considered a potential candidate to replace him.

SportsLine lists Meyer at plus-800 odds to become the Browns' next head coach in a list that also includes Mike McCarthy, Josh McDaniels, Ron Rivera, Kevin Stefanski, and Matt Rhule.

McCarthy, McDaniels, and Rivera are all considered stronger possibilities, but the fact that Meyer is even on the list after having not coached at all this season is interesting.

Meyer is most known for his NCAA coaching stints at Florida and Ohio State, where he totaled three national championships (two with the Gators).

The 55-year-old's run with the Buckeyes did not end without controversy, as Meyer was suspended for the first three games of 2018 after reports that Meyer knew about spousal abuse allegations levied against assistant coach Zach Smith prior to Smith being fired the preceding week.

Meyer then announced later in the season that he would be retiring after the year concluded due to health issues.

The Browns were expected by many to contend for a Super Bowl this season, but they won just six games in a 2019 campaign in which they generated more negative headlines than anything else.

Kitchens was largely criticized throughout the season for his questionable decision-making and poor leadership, and sideline blowups with Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. in the latter stages of the year did not help his cause.

Cleveland has not made the playoffs since the 2002-03 season, representing the longest active drought in the NFL.
