The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are finalizing a one-year contract with free-agent defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Schefter adds that the deal is just about done “barring any late hangups.”

The deal also comes on the heels of the Buccaneers releasing fellow defensive lineman Gerald McCoy on Monday.

Suh spent the 2018 campaign with the Los Angeles Rams, playing in all 16 games and registering 59 tackles, 4.5 sacks, a couple of fumble recoveries, and four passes defended, and alongside of Aaron Donald, he played a pivotal role in helping the Rams reach the Super Bowl, where they ultimately fell to the New England Patriots.

There was oddly very limited interest in Suh on the free-agent market, which led some to believe that he was asking for too much money. It was also widely expected that he would sign with a contender, which makes his deal with Tampa Bay all the more curious and speaks to just how little buzz there was surrounding the five-time Pro Bowler.

Suh, who played his collegiate football at the University of Nebraska, was originally selected by the Detroit Lions with the second overall pick of the 2010 NFL Draft.

He immediately stamped his name among the most dominant defensive players in the NFL, racking up 65 tackles and 10 sacks in his rookie campaign en route to a Pro Bowl appearance and First-Team All-Pro honors.

The 32-year-old spent the first five years of his career with the Lions, making four Pro Bowls before signing a monster deal with the Miami Dolphins. However, Suh was a massive disappointment in South Beach, resulting in the Dolphins releasing him last offseason.
