The Tampa Bay Buccaneers thought they had a bit of a project on their hands when they took Chris Godwin in the third round last year out of Penn State. Godwin has worked hard in the league so far and it has paid dividends.

Godwin has played so well that Bucs coach Dirk Koetter has taken notice and thinks that he deserves to be a starting wide receiver.

“He sure does,” Koetter said via the Tampa Bay Times. “Chris is playing really well right now. We look at it as if we have four starting receivers. All four of those guys, the only guy that really hasn't been a starter (in the NFL) is Chris. The other three have been, and we believe Chris is every bit in that same category.”

Godwin had 34 catches for 525 yards and a touchdown as a rookie, but he figures to see a much bigger role on the team this year. He is a speedy receiver that does it all on the outside including being a very good run blocker, something that can't be said about Mike Evans.

Godwin really flew under the radar in the first year but that doesn't bother the former Nittany Lion.

“Last year I was a little bit under the radar, and I'm fine with that,” Godwin said. “It allowed me to prepare as if I'm a starter, so you saw when I got my opportunities, I was able to take advantage.”

Godwin still needs to prove himself during training camp but all signs point towards a big year for the second-year wide receiver.
