The Tampa Bay Buccaneers seem poised to boast an entirely new look on offense to start the 2018 NFL season. It appears they have already decided on the potential pecking order in the backfield.

Tampa Bay has featured running back Peyton Barber ahead of Ronald Jones thus far in the preseason. According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, head coach Dirk Koetter looks to keep it this way moving forward:

“Peyton is our starter,” Koetter said Monday. “We're definitely going to use Ronald Jones and take advantage of what he's going to do. We do have the two veteran backs behind him. Again, we've got three more preseason games. Let's just let it sort out a little more.”

The Bucs featured that approach in the preseason opener versus the Miami Dolphins. Barber took four carries for 21 yards and a touchdown before calling it a night. Meanwhile, Jones finished with eight carries for nine yards and a touchdown.

Barber has been declared the starter, but that is hardly indicative of his status as a potential workhorse. He largely served as a complementary back last year after finishing the 2017 campaign with 108 carries for 423 yards and three touchdowns. Tampa Bay invested a second-round pick in Jones and could be just giving him an extra incentive to take the top spot for his own.

Tampa Bay may rely on a two-headed approach to begin the season. While Jones and Barber battle it out for carries, running backs Charles Sims and Jacquizz Rodgers will be competing for a role on passing downs.
