The Arizona Cardinals suffered key losses following the 2017 NFL season with a couple of surprising retirements. Although Arizona has already managed to fill the void at head coach with Steve Wilks, they still have lingering questions at the quarterback position.

As a result, the Cardinals have made it clear they will be closely monitoring their search for a new franchise player under center. According to Josh Weinfuss of ESPN, Wilks doubled down on the type of quarterback they will be looking for this offseason:

“[We’re looking for a] very smart and intelligent guy,” Wilks said. “A guy that’s going to come in and command, not only the huddle, but that side of the ball, that locker room. A competitor. A guy that loves to compete. We’re looking for all those things. That DNA.”

Wilks added that he will be open to input from anyone on the coaching staff or in the front office, per Darren Urban of the team website:

“We’re going to work together to make sure we bring the right guy in here,” Wilks said. “Coaches are watching tape and evaluating as well. Steve Keim and myself are constantly talking and communicate about our game plan of what we want to do. Anyone coming on this roster I will have a definite input and major factor in bringing them in.”

It is no surprise to see Wilks so adamant about bringing in their next potential franchise quarterback. Needless to say, their lackluster performance under center last year was largely the reason behind their disappointing campaign.

However, star players like running back David Johnson and cornerback Patrick Peterson are optimistic about a potential resurgence in the 2018 NFL season. In fact, Peterson has already gotten a head start in recruiting soon-to-be free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Cousins is poised to be the biggest name on the market this offseason, and for good reason. However, the Cardinals may be focused more on which quarterbacks are let go as a result of his signing. That said, Arizona may be patient in their pursuit of their next signal-caller.
