Carolina Panthers: 3 way-too-early free agency targets this offseason

The Carolina Panthers are going through a lot of big changes this offseason and there are some big questions heading forward.

Matt Rhule has replaced Ron Rivera as the team’s head coach, and with that change will come some new philosophies. Luke Kuechly, the anchor of the defense, shocked everyone by retiring and now they have a big hole to fill there. There are also questions if the team will bring back Cam Newton and if they don’t, that could also open up some other holes.

So who should the team target in free agency? Let’s break down three players that should be on the Panthers’ radar.

Dante Fowler Jr, Linebacker

The Panthers really don’t have anyone on their roster to replace Kuechly, so they are going to have to go through free agency or the draft to find someone. Dante Fowler Jr. is not someone who really plays the same role as Kuechly did, but he is a playmaker and can be a leader of the defense. Fowler finished the 2019 season racking up 58 tackles and 11.5 sacks.

It’s going to be hard to replace Kuechly’s productions, but Fowler is a playmaker who will have a lot of success with the Panthers’ defense.

Anthony Harris, Safety

The Panthers’ secondary needs help, and Anthony Harris would be an instant impact player for the defense. Harris was undrafted but as he got more playing time with the Vikings he had more success. As a full-time starter lining up opposite Harrison Smith during the 2019 season, he had 60 tackles and six interceptions.

Harris very well could end up back with the Vikings, and if he doesn’t he is going to be very sought after. He is going to be in line for a big payday, so if the Panthers want to sign him, they are going to need to pay up.

Jadeveon Clowney, Defensive End

Getting Jadeveon Clowney might be a pipe dream. But if the Panthers were able to sign him, he would be a great piece to build a new-look defense around. The stats don’t look super impressive for Clowney during 2019 with the Seahawks. But he dealt with double teams and injuries most of the season.

This is another player who is going to get a big payday but will be worth every dollar. If the Panthers do sign Clowney they wouldn’t be able to sign many others. So that is something the Panthers need to weigh.
