Over the past few days, the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics have battled over a marquee player.

The Lakers attempted to sway the New Orleans Pelicans to trade Anthony Davis by offering them a treasure trove of young talent and picks.

The Celtics pleaded with the Pels to wait until they could have a shot at Davis. In the end, it seems like Boston has won for the meantime.

But now, whispers have arisen that the Lakers would like to poach a current Celtic player in Kyrie Irving.

Sam Amick of The Athletic talked to Celtic's representatives about the possibility of Irving leaving to L.A. To be blunt, the team is not concerned at all with that possibility, and Amick states that:

“The Celtics’ Kyrie Irving has his own unique place in this basketball play that we’ll get into later here — and it’s a hell of a role — but Boston is known to believe that the Lakers aren’t a threat to steal him away (New York is another story).”

Irving is a world-class talent. He is easily a top-five point guard in a league dominated by guards. It makes sense that the Lakers would give the Celtics a courtesy call to see if they can work something out.

However, it wouldn't make sense for Irving to reunite with James.

There was already a much-publicized split between the two stars. Irving seemed determined to escape James shadow. Now that he is in Boston, he finally has.

It's much more likely he ventures to a team that is starting from nothing, like the Knicks.

Only time will tell what uniform Irving will don to start next season, but the Celtics are confident it won't be purple and gold.
