According to a recent report, Charlotte Hornets All-Star point guard Kemba Walker has already agreed to terms on a summer move to the Boston Celtics once he officially hits free agency within the next couple of days. He is set to take the place of Kyrie Irving, who himself appears to be on his way out of Boston.

As it turns out, this particular change of the guards is exactly what the Celtics wanted all along, with the Boston Herald's Steve Bulpett reporting that this trade was already on the table for the C's over the past two seasons.

One league exec who’s dealt with the Celtics even went as far as to tell the Herald he knows for a fact the club would have been willing to trade Irving for Walker during the past two years.

This is a pretty significant bit of news which does hold a lot of weight in terms of how Boston views Irving as the team's talisman. Bulpett goes on to say that it seems that the C's were never really impressed with Kyrie, and that they had long accepted the fact that the former NBA champ was not going to be part of their long-term plans.

If he’s right, it would indicate the Celts knew there were issues with Irving’s approach to leadership and general ability to help cool the fires of young players whose image might have surpassed their actual abilities following the 2018 conference finals run.

The relationship between the Celtics and Irving has never been bright and sunny, but this report puts a whole new perspective on the issue. Whether or not this will have an effect on a team such as the Brooklyn Nets and their incessant desire to bring Irving on board, however, remains to be seen.
