The Boston Celtics locked up 6-foot-6 swingman Jaylen Brown to a huge $115-million deal last October, which has put him under contract with the team until the end of the 2023-24 season.

For an anonymous Eastern Conference executive, however, the Celtics got quite a bargain here, considering how they were able to sign Brown without offering a max deal — something this unnamed front office executive claims his unnamed team would have done if only they were given the opportunity.

“We had an idea of throwing him a max offer sheet as a restricted free agent, if we could make the cap space happen,” said the executive, via Keith P. Smith of SB Nation. If nothing else, Boston would have had to match it. Danny (Ainge) did good to get him for less than the max.”

There's a lot of anonymity in the above statement, but one thing is clear: Brown was/is a hot commodity.

The anonymous exec then went on to explain exactly why they believe the Celtics wing is so valuable.

“I think Brown is the perfect 1A guy,” he added. “He can be your #1, but he doesn’t have to be. Some guys have to be, and there can only be one #1 on a team. You saw that last year in Boston. I think that’s the reason they can make it work. (Jayson) Tatum and Brown are just perfect partners.”

Tatum and Brown are truly one of the most promising young cores in the NBA today, and kudos to Danny Ainge and the Celtics front office for ensuring that this partnership remains intact for the next few years.
