Boston Celtics star Kyrie Irving is one of the latest athletes to hop on the vegan trend, a diet based around plant-based foods while cutting out meat.

Irving explained why he made the change when he joined Boston:

“I was noticing that I wasn’t able to recover as fast after games and workouts,” said Irving, according to LZ Granderson of the Los Angeles Times. “I did a lot of research and learned that my diet could be a factor. “It was good timing as I was struggling to find quality plant-based foods that still had a lot of flavor.”

Not only does the All-Star guard think that other athletes will soon follow suit and begin to partake in the vegan diet, but he thinks it will also become a more popular trend among non-athletes, as well:

“Not only do I think it will be a permanent change among athletes, but I think we will see people who aren’t professional athletes making the change as well,” said Irving.

Well, whatever Irving is doing, it is obviously working, as he is having what is the best season of his career.

Thus far during the 2018-19 campaign, the 26-year-old is averaging 23.6 points, 6.9 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals over 32.5 minutes per game while shooting 49.8 percent from the floor, 40.9 percent from 3-point range and 86.6 percent from the free-throw line.

Kyrie Irving arrived with the Celtics during the summer of 2017, coming over in a trade that sent Isaiah Thomas to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Irving is in his eighth NBA season overall and has made six All-Star teams.
