Boston Celtics hybrid guard Marcus Smart will undergo surgery to repair a torn ligament in his injured right thumb today, likely to miss the rest of the regular season with some hope he's able to return during the playoffs, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Celtics were looking for a second opinion on his injury before making a decision, given how critical a player Smart is for this roster, coming as a spark plug off the bench.

Boston currently has dealt with a plague of injuries, including rookie big man Daniel Theis, who is out for the season, Jaylen Brown under the concussion protocol following a scary fall, and star Kyrie Irving, who has been shut down for the week with knee soreness.

Smart's return could play a major factor for this team as a Swiss Army knife that can fill up the stat sheet in the offensive and defensive end of the ball. His energy has proved vital through many stretches in this season, considering the front office held off their chance of trading him prior to the trade deadline.

The Oklahoma State product suffered a self-inflicted laceration that kept him out for two weeks prior to the All-Star Game, causing concern for his fiery temperament, which has proved volatile on and off the court in several instances.

Yet this Celtics team remains optimistic he's able to come back and rehab the injury in time to join the rotation, hoping to make a deep postseason run, likely locked into the No. 2 seed in the East.
