37-year-old veteran quarterback Philip Rivers is making history, with the Los Angeles Chargers signal-caller surpassing 55,500 career passing yards in Week 2 against the Detroit Lions.

Per NFL Research on Twitter, Rivers made elite company on Sunday.

Philip Rivers became the 8th player in NFL history to reach 55,500 career passing yards – Others: Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Tom Brady, Dan Marino, Ben Roethlisberger and Eli Manning

Eli Manning, notably, was traded for Rivers after the 2004 NFL Draft. Manning voiced frustration against the Chargers drafting him, so after he was selected with the first overall pick over a decade ago, the now-L.A. franchise sent him to the New York Giants for fourth overall pick Philip Rivers, then an NC State product, and a third-round pick.

Rivers continues to notch new records and leave his mark on the history of professional while playing at an elite level his team needs in order to compete. The veteran quarterback now has over 55,500 passing yards along with throwing 377 touchdowns in the regular season, advancing his case for Canton, Ohio, enshrinement in the Hall of Fame.

The Chargers are partially relying on Rivers to use his experience and lead the team while Pro-Bowl running back Melvin Gordon is holding out for a long-term contract. In his stead, Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson are forming a solid duo in the backfield, with Ekeler scoring four combined rushing and receiving touchdowns through one and half weeks of the 2019 NFL season.
