The Kansas City Chiefs have officially released defensive end Jarvis Jenkins after signing former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin.

Jenkins had spent the past three seasons with the team and posted six combined tackles this season.

The eight-year pro started his career with the Washington Redskins and was with the franchise for several years before spending a season with the Chicago Bears in 2015.

However, the Chiefs chose to waive Jenkins after signing Benjamin, according to Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk.

The Chiefs added Kelvin Benjamin to provide injury cover at wide receiver, and parted ways with a defensive lineman to make room.

The team announced that veteran defensive end Jarvis Jenkins had been waived in the corresponding transaction.

It's clear that Kansas City needed help at receiver due to Sammy Watkins' injury situation, which seems like it will keep him out until the playoffs.

So, it made sense to sign Benjamin in hopes of finding ways for him to excel in the team's high-powered offense.

Andy Reid's squad has posted the best record in the AFC through 12 games, as they sit at 10-2 on the year ahead of Sunday's matchup with the 7-5 Baltimore Ravens.

With the New England Patriots, Houston Texans, and Los Angeles Chargers all at 9-3, the Chiefs will need to continue to their hot streak in order to lock up home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

After the matchup against the Ravens, a showdown with the Chargers awaits in Week 15.
