The Kansas City Chiefs experienced some turnover in their backfield this offseason. Regardless, the team has indicated that they are confident in running back Damien Williams as the starter.

Williams has not had much experience fulfilling such a role throughout his five-year career. According to Brandon Kiley of 610 Sports, offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy has already declared him as the No. 1 back going into the 2019 NFL season.

“Damien Williams is our starter. We expect him to excel in that role,” Bienemy said.

This is certainly an interesting development out of Kansas City. The Chiefs parted ways with running back Kareem Hunt last season after a video surfaced of him kicking a woman. His departure left a notable void in the backfield that was quickly filled by Williams for the rest of the year. He ultimately finished the 2018 campaign with 256 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns, 23 receptions, 160 receiving yards, and two receiving touchdowns.

Despite their confidence in Williams, the front office still managed to shore up some solid depth in the form of running back Carlos Hyde. Although Hyde struggled to find his footing last season, he has still proven more than capable of handling a heavy workload during his days with the San Francisco 49ers. As a result, many have already assumed that he would be taking over the starting job this year.

It is encouraging to see that the Chiefs have plenty of confidence in Williams. He is now poised for a career year as the starter in one of the NFL's most high-powered offenses. He will need to do what he can in order to fend off carries from Hyde in the 2018 campaign.
