The Kansas City Chiefs are not in a huge hurry to extend star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. But when they do, Mahomes might be the beneficiary of the largest contract in league history.

Former NFL wideout and current Sunday Night Football commentator Cris Collinsworth said he would be “surprised” if Mahomes received less than $50 million in annual average value (via Aaron Ladd of KSHB):

“There's no question he's going to be the highest-paid player in the history of the league …,” Collinsworth said of Mahomes. “If it comes in at anything less than $50 million (per year), I'd be really surprised.”

The Chiefs exercised their fifth-year option on Mahomes at the end of April, giving them some added time to negotiate and find the right number as they pursue an extension.

Mahomes is absolutely deserving of a huge deal. But Collinsworth's estimate of $50 million per season would be a drastic leap in the quarterback market.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson currently has the highest AAV for any player at the position at $35 million per year. Naturally, an additional $15 million per year over the length of any deal would amount to an enormous monetary value.

But if anyone were to smash through the $50 million glass ceiling, Mahomes figures to be the first.

The 24-year-old has taken the league by storm, winning the NFL MVP Award in his first full season and leading the Chiefs to a Super Bowl title this past year.

Kansas City has made it clear Mahomes will be around for the long haul. The question is, just how much will he make over the life of his next contract?
