The Kansas City Chiefs came into the NFL offseason with high hopes of upgrading the defensive side of the football, and they have made a move in the right direction on Monday agreeing to terms with Tyrann Mathieu, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

During the 2018 NFL season, the Chiefs were virtually unstoppable on offense with MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes leading the way. The team fired on all cylinders and were able to make it to the AFC Championship Game, but fell short against the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.

The one glaring flaw for the Chiefs this past season was their play defensively. Although Dee Ford played well and Justin Houston formidable, the secondary struggled with Eric Berry still battling his way back from injury and no viable options to replace his impact.

Fortunately for Kansas City, adding Mathieu into the mix is a significant upgrade in an area of need. The Chiefs will now have a legitimate threat at safety. Mathieu gambled on himself last season with the Houston Texans, and that gamble has certainly paid off with this lucrative deal.

In 16 games with the Texans in 2018, Mathieu finished with two interceptions, eight passes defended, a fumble recovery, and 70 solo tackles.

Mathieu has yet to return to his All-Pro form from 2015 when he was a dominant force in the secondary for the Arizona Cardinals, but he has an opportunity to shine in Kansas City who are betting on him being a game changer for a struggling defense.
