Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard acknowledged the outpouring of affection and memories following the tragic loss of former Lakers star Kobe Bryant in a helicopter crash on Sunday morning.

Leonard, who says he stays “close” to the Staples Center, said it was “crazy” to see how many fans gathered outside of the arena for vigils–both kids and adults–and also noted the number of people donning Kobe attire.

The Clippers star also spoke on the solemnity of the vigils, pointing out those who brought flowers and candles to the scene in what has become a public memorial:

Fans have gathered outside the arena all week following news of the death of Bryant and his daughter, Gianna, as well as seven others in the fatal accident.

Authorities even had to try to mitigate the crowds due to the Grammys, which were hosted at the Staples Center later on Sunday evening.

The memorials have not been limited to the Staples Center, however (via Ben Golliver of the Washington Post):

While the Lakers’ official store in El Segundo remained closed Tuesday afternoon, a steady stream of fans visited the team’s UCLA Health Training Center practice facility across the street, where members of the organization have been in mourning since Sunday. A large shrine near the front entrance included a wreath, a pair of Bryant’s Nike sneakers, posters, signs and dozens of bouquets of flowers. Hundreds of fans inscribed messages in black pen on a white commemorative wall that stood at least six feet tall.

The public response has been a direct indicator of the impact Bryant had, especially in the city of Los Angeles.

Needless to say, his spirit lives on, and his legacy will never be forgotten.
