Undefeated Japanese horse looking to make history

Forever Young is a 10-1 longshot from Japan that could come to Louisville and become the first Japanese horse to win the Kentuck Derby. Japanese horses always come to the derby with high hopes and let the bettors down, but there could be something different about Forever Young.

Forever Young is a proven winner. He has won his last five starts, which include two big graded-stakes races. He also won the 2024 Saudi Derby in February and the 2024 UAE Derby in March.

There are only two horses in the 2024 Kentucky Derby field with an undefeated record, and Forever Young is the only one with at least three starts. He could be another disappointment, but the results are hard to argue.

Sierra Leone's position could cost him

Sierra Leone's goal when running races is to fall back early and then use a late rally to take the first position. He has won in three of four starts and was a nose away from being the third undefeated horse in the Kentucky Derby field. He finished his two-year-old season with a runner-up finish at Remsen Stakes but has back-to-back victories at the Risen Star and the Blue Grass Stakes.

Sierra Leone is starting from the No.2 post, which means he will have a lot of horses in his way in the early portion of the race. If he gets bogged down in the traffic, he may find returning from the deficit difficult. If this happens, he will need a lot of things to go right to win.

No horse has won the Kentucky Derby from No.17

The Kentucky Derby's favorite, Fierceness, drew the 17th post position at the race draw on Saturday night. The 17 has never won the Derby in 44 races. While this seems bad, the 17 is a good position for Fierceness, as they can win from the outside against the other speed horses.

Fierceness' owner is Mike Repole. He had seven horses reach the starting gate, and none have placed. Some of his heavy favorite horses haven't even made the race, as Uncle Mo was scratched with a gastrointestinal illness in 2011, and Forte went down last year with a bruised hoof.

Can Fierceness end both the 17-position curse and Mike Repole's losing streak?
