The Indianapolis Colts are clinging to the final playoff spot in the AFC with two games left and are scrambling to find some depth in the secondary after losing safety Julian Blackmon for the season.

The Colts brought in four different defensive backs for tryouts on Thursday, including former first-round pick Karl Joseph, per Aaron Wilson. It is unclear whether Indy will sign any of the players or not but they will probably want another body in case more injuries occur over the next two weeks.

Joseph is the most notable of the bunch that the Colts worked out. A six-year NFL veteran, Joseph last played in 2021 for the Pittsburgh Steelers, appearing in two games. He remained with the Steelers in 2022 but did not play due to injury.

Drafted by the then-Oakland Raiders in 2016, Josepth started 41 of the 49 games he played with the Raiders in his four seasons. He then played in 14 games, starting eight for the 2020 Cleveland Browns before joining the Colts.

Colts muddying the waters

Losing Blackmon is a big blow for the Colts and comes at one of the worst possible times of the season. After winning four consecutive games the Colts have lost two of their last three and don’t have much room for error in the AFC playoff picture.

Blackmon started every game for Indy this season and leads the team with four interceptions and eight pass deflections. He has 88 total tackles and five tackles for loss. A 2020 third-round pick, Blackmon started 46 of the 50 games so far in his career, all of them with the Colts.

Indy is one of four 8-7 teams in the AFC vying for that final wild card spot and the Colts currently hold that final spot entering Week 17. A date with the Raiders on Sunday is as crucial as they come for the Colts this season.

A loss sets up a chaotic scenario in Week 18, while a win for Indy puts them in a position to clinch a playoff berth at home against the Houston Texans in the last game of the season.
