The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott have resumed contract negotiations, but things might not really start to heat up until closer to the long-term extension deadline.

ESPN NFL reporter Jeff Darlington appeared on ESPN's Get Up! on Friday morning and gave up an update on the contract negotiations. Darlington said that he thinks the Cowboys are willing to pay him the big bucks. But there are still some questions about the structure of the contract that needs to be worked out.

“These guys know each other about as well as anybody. To me it’s still a matter of the money, I think the Cowboys are willing to pay him the money at this point. Now it’s the structure of the deal,” Darlington said via Clint Buckley of 247 Sports. “When you start to get to that point I feel like you’re at least getting closer. By all means there’s no real reason at this point to rush. The deadline, in my opinion, becomes mid-summer when it comes to getting longterm deals done with these franchise players. So put July 15 on your calendar. Until then, honestly, the leverage isn’t in anybody’s court. They just kind of need to hunker down and figure out if they can figure this out before the imposed deadline.”

With the Cowboys placing the franchise tag on Prescott, the two sides have until July 15th to agree on a deal. Or else he will play under the tag for 2020 and become a free agent after next season. Both sides seem to want to get a long-term deal done, and the pressure will only ramp up as that date gets closer and closer.
