Jason Garrett's contract expires after the 2019 season. Instead of addressing the situation by negotiating an extension with his team's longtime coach, though, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has initiated a holding pattern on Garrett's future.

“I’m satisfied with where we are with his contract right now,” he said of Garrett on The Rich Eisen Show in early May, per Pro Football Talk's Charean Williams. “It is to be negotiated at some point in the future. We all know that we need to get out here and win ball games.”

That doesn't exactly sound like a coach in good graces with ownership. Whether or not Garrett deserves to be at this ostensible crossroads, though, is a matter of debate.

Before last season, his days in Dallas appeared numbered following a disappointing 9-7 campaign in 2017. But the Cowboys rebounded to go 10-6, winning the NFC East crown after a dismal 3-5 start. Dallas did well in the playoffs, too, beating the Seattle Seahawks 24-22 in the wild card round before falling 30-22 to the eventual NFC Champion Los Angeles Rams.

If the Cowboys' impressive second-half turnaround wasn't enough for Garrett to gain a firmer grasp of job security, just what would be? That remains unclear, but Bleacher Report's Maurice Moton believes he's on the “hottest of hot seats.”

The NFC is absolutely loaded. The Rams might be Super Bowl favorites, the New Orleans Saints are right there behind them, and teams like the Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears, and Green Bay Packers will undoubtedly be heard from, too.

Dallas, obviously, will need to be in the hunt for a conference title for Garrett to retain his job.
