Ezekiel Elliott's contract situation is one of the many things that can either send a Dallas Cowboys fans to tears or an angry rampage. The star running back's inability to mint a new deal has caused a lot of strain within the team and its legion of followers.

With neither side looking to compromise, the possibility of Zeke returning to the Cowboys during the early weeks of the season has become a lot dimmer. Moreover, Jerry Jones' tone through the entire ordeal has gone from confident to pessimistic in a matter of days.

His latest statement about the situation, as reported by Jon Machota of The Athletic, is not doing Dallas any favors in getting its superstar playmaker back into the fold.

Plenty of Cowboys fans have become frustrated with the entire ordeal and haven't shied away from letting their feelings be known. Some blamed Elliott for being greedy; others rained flak on the team for not giving their star his due money; others still begged for the two parties to not ruin the team that they have been building over the past two years.

However, nobody in the Cowboys camp can deny that Elliott is an important part of their offense. He has garnered 4,048 rushing yards in only three seasons of professional play. The former Ohio State Buckeye is also a reliable pass-catcher, finishing with 567 receiving yards on 77 receptions last season.

Some think that Dallas won't miss Elliott in the season-opener as Tony Pollard is ready to step up in his stead. Either way, it's safe to say fans will more than welcome Elliott back if he inks a new deal with the Cowboys.
