Ex-Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle is having his case for rape put on hold in order for a mental health evaluation.

Randle, 27, is accused of raping and abusing a female last September in Sedgwick County, Kansas.

Attorneys representing Randle are arguing that the former running back is not in the right mental state to defend himself in court.

According to Sedgwick County District Attorney, Marc Bennett, the Randle case has been taken off the docket and Randle will undergo a mental health evaluation to see if he is competent enough to stand trial.

If not, Randle will be placed in a mental institution until he is competent enough to serve.

Randle's best season with the Cowboys came in 2015 when he rushed for 315 yards and also tallied 86 receiving yards.

In three seasons with the Cowboys, Randle rushed for 822 yards and had 170 receiving yards.

In 2016 the Cowboys selected then-Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott.

Since being out of the NFL, Randle has been in and out of trouble with the law, including arrests for shoplifting underwear and the more serious crime of rape and domestic abuse.

It is unsure when Randle will be able to stand trial if he is proven competent enough to stand.
