Randy Gregory's career with the Dallas Cowboys has been an uphill battle, to say the least. The defensive end was drafted in 2015. He's played in 28 games so far – 12 in 2015, two in 2016 and 14 in 2018.

The reason for that is simple, suspensions and injuries.

In the 2015 NFL Draft Combine, Gregory failed a drug test. Then he suffered an injury in the first game of the season. This caused his rookie season to be sporadic and ineffective, leading to no sacks in 12 games.

2016 was a lot worse though. Although he did pick up his first career sack in two games – Gregory played in just two games. He failed a drug test and missed the first four games of the season. A second failed drug test added 10 more games to the suspension.

Then he failed another test – leading to a full year suspension.

In 2018, Gregory managed to play in 14 games – but following the season was suspended indefinitely following another failed test. Now it appears he's applying for reinstatement this week.

If we're being honest with ourselves here, it's unlikely Gregory plays in 2019. He was just suspended in February and his last suspension saw him miss an entire year. However, the hope is that the defensive end can plead his case and showcase to the NFL that he's taking everything very seriously.

The Dallas Cowboys did extend Randy Gregory through the 2020 season. Therefore, even if he misses 2019 they'd have him on the roster for 2020. In 2018, the defensive end recorded six sacks – showing he can be a solid defensive presence and one the Cowboys would love to have in the future.

Right now, Randy Gregory's future is out of his hands. If and when he's reinstated though, it's up to him how long his career is and how he's remembered.
