The NFL Draft came and went with Earl Thomas still a member of the Seattle Seahawks after the Dallas Cowboys were unable to seal the deal on a long-speculated trade.

But while there’s a belief that the Cowboys have missed their window to land the star safety, David Moore of the Dallas Morning News disagrees. Moore believes that the Cowboys still have an interest in pursuing Thomas even with the draft all done and dusted.

The Cowboys' attraction to Thomas is real. An inability to swing a deal tied to the draft doesn't diminish their desire going forward.

The Cowboys continue to have a pressing need at free safety. With Byron Jones set to move to cornerback this upcoming season, Xavier Woods remains the lone veteran free safety on the roster heading into the season.

They had several opportunities to address that need in the draft, but they did not pull the trigger on a single one. They also don’t appear interested in the perfectly serviceable veteran safeties still on the free-agent market.

It was reported prior to the draft that trade talks between the Cowboys and Seahawks centered around Dallas’ second-round pick. It remains to be seen whether that actually is Seattle’s asking price for Thomas, and even if it is, it might still be too high for the Cowboys' taste.

But whether it’s their continued pursuit of Thomas or the signing of someone else, it’s clear that the Cowboys must find a concrete solution for the free safety position fairly soon.
