Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell made headlines for his uncut, brutally honest opening press conference with the franchise last offseason. Campbell definitely falls into the category of player's coach and is a guy that the Lions seem to love playing for. Formerly a tight ends coach with the Miami Dolphins, Campbell had many experiences that prepared him for his head coaching gig. One of them, involving a consistently drunk player, takes the cake. Campbell revealed why the Dolphins let a constant drunk play, via Pro Football Talk.

“I remember I had a guy in Miami, god he loved ball,” Campbell said, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “He was a dynamic football player, but he came in every day just reeking of alcohol. He was probably on a bender for who knows how long, but god he loved football. He showed up, he didn’t have any M.A.’s [missed assignments], he hustled non-stop, and it’s like, you know what? You’ll find a way to make that guy work. Not saying we want those guys, but he loved ball, and he had success. And he’s still playing today, by the way.”

According to Campbell, the Dolphins had a player who “loved ball” but “came in every day just reeking of alcohol.” The Lions head coach revealed that the player, while seemingly always drunk, never missed assignments, always hustled and turned out to be a productive player.

He was everything the Dolphins could have wanted in a player, besides, well, his drinking problem. Good thing the Lions head coach added the disclaimer, “not saying we want those guys”, otherwise he would have had a lot of questions to answer from Detroit's ownership.
