The Miami Dolphins were far from being a playoff team in 2019, but that does not mean that Brian Flores' first year as head coach was not a success.

Expected by some to be one of the worst clubs in NFL history, the Dolphins managed to win five games, rebounding from an 0-7 start to go 5-4 over their last nine contests.

As a result, Flores has been lauded for the job he did in his debut season, and former NFL head coach Tony Dungy even thinks that Flores reminds him a bit of himself:

“I think they look for a leader,” Dungy said of the Dolphins, according to Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post. “They look for somebody from a winning organization who had leadership qualities, who can direct them for a long time, and Brian Flores reminds me a lot of myself. … I think it’s having convictions, having the belief in what you do and not letting other people talk you out of how you want to do things. And being steadfast and persevering even if the results aren’t there right away.”

Dungy had an extended head coaching career in the league, serving six seasons as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and then seven years at the helm for the Indianapolis Colts.

Over that time, Dungy went 139-69 and made the playoffs in 11 of his 13 seasons, leading the Colts to a Super Bowl title to cap off the 2006 season.

Obviously, Flores has a long way to go before he can even begin to reach Dungy's level, but the fact that a Hall of Fame coach sees such promise in Flores is a great sign for Miami moving forward. The Dolphins will be hoping to take a step forward next season under Flores' guidance.
