EA Sports has announced that NBA Live 19 will allow users to create women basketball players, a first for the basketball video game industry.
Plenty of people reported on the matter, but for the sake of having something official looking:
EA Sports has announced that for the first time in a basketball video game, users will be able to create female players in NBA LIVE 19.

With the growing popularity of the WNBA, it makes sense for EA Sports to do this for NBA Live 19.
Outside of that, this is just common sense. For all video games of the past who have not had this feature in their games, they were basically ignoring half of the population on the planet. Why alienate women, even if the game is about non-sports stuff.
Why did women have to always be male sky pirates in the 1990s?
To be Camp Crystal Lake clear: I am actually unaware if there were any video games about sky pirates in the 1990s. Also, I am not sure I know what a sky pirate is, but in Final Fantasy XII, Balthier was technically a sky pirate I think?
The video game Final Fantasy XII features two characters, sky pirates Balthier and Fran, whose creation was inspired by Han and Chewie.
Near the end of the story, he carries her to safety like this.

Confirmed. He was a sky pirate. Sky pirates are real.
Quickly moving back to the point of this post, it will be interesting to see if other sports video games — more importantly, the companies overseeing their development — will implement the same plan of attack as EA Sports is doing with NBA Live 19.
Let's hope so.
