Former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson suggested the media overdramatized his purportedly sour relationship with Carson Wentz.

Pederson made his first public comments Tuesday since being fired by the Eagles in January. He told John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia there was a “misnomer” regarding his relationship with the former Eagles quarterback, adding he understood Wentz's frustration at being benched in favor of Jalen Hurts:

“I understand where Carson’s coming from because it’s difficult,” Pederson said, via NBC Sports Philadelphia. “When you’re the starter and things like this happen and you basically get benched. Our season wasn’t going the way we wanted it to go and it’s difficult. It’s difficult for any player to go through that. … You’ve got to have the conversations, you’ve got to have the open-door policy, and you’ve got to communicate, and felt like we did that.

“I’ve always felt like I was going to do the right thing for the Philadelphia Eagles, but yet I understand what he was feeling and what he was going through. I know there was frustration there.”

The rumors regarding Wentz's relationship with Pederson took center stage this offseason, even after Pederson was dismissed.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Wentz and Pederson did not speak for “weeks on end.” That report obviously runs counter to Pederson's suggestion the organization had an “open-door policy.”

Only Wentz and Pederson truly know the real dynamic that played out over the course of the past few seasons. Regardless, the former Eagles head coach said he has “a lot of respect” for Wentz and is excited to see what he does in his next chapter in Indianapolis.
