Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman had some interesting comments when asked why they decided not to execute a trade to get Jadeveon Clowney. It had been reported that Clowney had interest in joining the Eagles, and it seemed to make sense for them to try and make a deal.

“We’re not just trying to collect talent, we’re trying to build a team,” Roseman said via NJ.com. “And with that, you can’t always have everything exactly that you want, especially because we want to have a team that’s competing for championships this year, for sure, but also going forward.”

Those comments seem to indicate the team didn't think they could sign him to a long -term extension and didn't want to give up their future to get one year of Clowney.

The Seattle Seahawks only gave up two linebackers and a third-round pick to get Clowney, and that is something the Eagles could have pulled off if they wanted to.

“We’ve put a lot of resources into that position,” Roseman said.

This offseason, the Eagles traded away Michael Bennett, and Chris Long decided to hang up his cleats. To replace them the team brought back in Brandon Graham and Vinny Curry. They also have some guys like Derek Barnett, Josh Sweat, Daeshon Hall, who Roseman said needs to step up and take a step forward.

“Those guys need to step up,” Roseman said. “And if they don’t, we’ll address it at that time.”

If they aren't stepping up, Roseman will have to turn somewhere else because Clowney isn't an option anymore.
