Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nate Sudfeld threw for 312 yards in a 37-20 preseason loss to the New England Patriots on Thursday night, which represents the most passing yards in a preseason game since 2000.

With Carson Wentz still on the mend, Nick Foles got the start in the Super Bowl rematch and played a little over a quarter before exiting the game in favor of Sudfeld due to a strained shoulder. With the Eagles already facing a 17-0 deficit, Sudfeld let loose and attempted 39 passes in the game. He completed 22 of those attempts, with three of those going for touchdowns. He also tossed one interception.

Joe Callahan played the last series of the game for Philadelphia.

The 24-year-old Sudfeld is entering his second season with the Eagles after getting drafted by the Washington Redskins in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. The Indiana product was inactive for all 16 games in his rookie season, and the Redskins waived the quarterback before the 2017 season.

Sudfeld joined the Eagles' practice squad shortly after Washington cut him loose, and he was promoted to the active roster in November. He appeared in one game at the end of last season after Philadelphia had already clinched the No. 1 seed. In a 6-0 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Sudfeld went 19-for-23 for 134 yards. His 82.6 percent completion rate set a record for best ever in an NFL debut (minimum 20 attempts).

With Sudfeld shining in preseason, he's making his case to stick around, whether it's on the active roster or back on the practice squad when Wentz gets healthy.
