Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz is on track to make his long-awaited return from a torn ACL and LCL next Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts pending medical clearance, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network also reported that Wentz could be cleared for contact this week, although he raised some questions about whether the Eagles QB would play right away.

Schefter’s report comes just a week after ESPN colleague Chris Mortensen reported that it was “realistic” that Wentz would make his return in Week 3.

Wentz was reportedly outstanding at practice this past Wednesday — the nine-month anniversary of his injury — as he looked sharp and ready for action. Some within the Eagles organization believed Wentz was ready to play way back in Week 1, which was Wentz’s goal.

However, the team has adopted a more cautious approach to their young quarterback with their long-term future more in mind as opposed to short-term thinking, which is why they’ve kept him out this long.

Mortensen also reported that the Eagles’ data showed that the young QB has progressed to where he’s now able to protect himself on the field.

“That’s correct,” head coach Doug Pederson said. “That’s what we’ve seen really since he came back into 11-on-11 as training camp progressed.”

The Eagles have no reason to rush Wentz if he’s still not cleared for contact this week. They still have reigning Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles to deputize. But it appears they’ve waited long enough and Wentz really is ready to make his return.
