The Philadelphia Eagles are probably still riding the high that comes with winning a franchise’s first Super Bowl. But to have a chance to do it again next year, they will have to get down to the business of football and figure out how to make the team better.

To do so, they could be forced to get rid of a veteran defensive end, Vinny Curry.

Why him? He had a good season and was an integral part of the team’s defense. You’d think they’d want to do whatever they could to keep such a successful unit together. They probably wish they could, but he’s expensive, and they need salary cap space.

Curry is set to count $11 million against the cap next season an will have a base of $9 million. In a perfect world, the Eagles will talk him into taking less or at least restructuring his deal to give the team some cap relief.

If they can’t, Ian Rappaport of NFL.com thinks they may trade him or outright let him go.

Should they do that, someone is going to snatch him up in a heartbeat, but not at a price anywhere near what the Eagles were paying. With just 3.5 sacks during the 2015 season, it’s a little surprising the signed him to a five-year, $47.25 million extension in February 2016. He only had 2.5 sacks during the 2016 season and just three sacks last year.

Whoever does sign him will hope that he can be a productive member of their defensive line rotation. They’ll also hope he can return to his 2014 form when he had nine sacks.

But at $9 million in base salary, he is going to be too expensive for the Eagles or anyone else.
