Wes Welker is set to receive one of the biggest honors that the Red Raiders have to offer. Texas Tech has announced that three players will join the team's Ring of Honor later this fall. These players are legendary linebacker Thomas Howard, tight end Andre Tillman, and wide receiver Wes Welker.
Texas Tech shared a video clip where Welker learned that he will enter the Texas Tech Ring of Honor. In the clip, we see Welker's emotional reaction to the good news.
“The Ring of Honor is reserved for the best of the best in the history of Texas Tech Football. Without question, the likes of Thomas Howard, Andre Tillman and Wes Welker belong in that category and are deserving inductees into the Ring of Honor,” Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said in a press release. “We're pleased to welcome them and their families back to campus this season to take their place forever inside Jones AT&T Stadium.”
Welker and his cohort will become the ninth, 10th, and 11th members of Texas Tech's Ring of Honor. It was established in 2012 with the goal of selecting an elite group of former Texas Tech players and coaches who have made outstanding contributions to the football program. The most recent inductee was Patrick Mahomes in 2022.
Texas Tech will induct these three players into the Ring of Honor on September 14th when the Red Raiders host the North Texas Mean Green. The players' names will be permanently placed on the wall of the West Stadium Building.
He was previously inducted into the Texas Tech Hall of Fame as part of the 2016 class.
Welker is currently the wide receivers coach for the Miami Dolphins.
Remembering Wes Welker's collegiate and NFL football career
Welker was a wide receiver and kick/punt return specialist for the Red Raiders from 2000 through 2003. He was the final recruit of Mike Leach's first class as head coach to sign with Texas Tech.
He was known as “The Natural” during his time at Texas Tech. Welker recorded back-to-back 1,000 receiving yards seasons as well as All Big 12 first- and second-team honors in his final two seasons with the program.
Welker left the Red Raiders as the schools all-time receiving leader with 3,069 yards. This record has since been broken by both Michael Crabtree and Jakeem Grant. Welker currently ranks second in school history for career receptions at 259. He also added eight touchdowns on punt/kick returns. Welker remains the NCAA FBS record holder for career punt return yardage with 1,761 yards on 152 returns.
Wes Welker was not selected in the 2004 NFL Draft but signed with the San Diego Chargers as a UDFA. He eventually stuck with the Miami Dolphins and began a 12-year career where he was a significant player for both the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos.
He appeared in three Super Bowls — twice with the Patriots and once with the Broncos.
Welker ended his NFL career with 9,924 receiving yards and 50 total touchdowns. He also logged 6,722 return yards on punt and kick returns.
