The Atlanta Falcons finally took care of their main piece of business this offseason by signing quarterback Matt Ryan to his gigantic new contract.

With Ryan’s deal out of the way, Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff says the team will now focus its attention toward taking care of two highly important young pieces on their roster: left tackle Jake Matthews and defensive tackle Jake Matthews.

Per team reporter Kelsey Conway:

Listening to #Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff’s interview on @929TheGame this morning, Dimitroff says now with Matt Ryan’s contract done, the focus turns to getting new deals for 2 guys: Jake Matthews and Grady Jarrett.

Matthew has steadily evolved into the franchise left tackle the Falcons envisioned when they took him No. 6 overall in the 2014 NFL Draft. He has been an ever-present protecting Ryan’s blindside, missing just one game in his first four years in the league. His next contract should make him one of the best-paid players at his position.

As for Jarrett, he has continued his steady improvement through his first three years in the league. After an impressive showing during the Super Bowl against the Patriots, Jarrett had a fine 2017 season as he started all 16 games and racked up four sacks with 55 total tackles. Along with Vic Beasley, Tak McKinley, and Deion Jones, Jarrett is an integral part of the team’s promising, young front seven.

Dimitroff will have some work to do in order to get the Falcons’ cap sheet all sorted out. But if they want to continue contending for years to come, they’ll have to find a way to keep their bright young stars in Matthews and Jarrett.
