Dirk Koetter first served as offensive coordinator for Atlanta Falcons from 2012 through 2014. Well, after being fired as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Koetter is back for another stint as Falcons' offensive coordinator, and he says his familiarity with quarterback Matt Ryan will certainly make his job easier.

“That familiarity is going to be really important,” Koetter told reporters, according to Will McFadden of the Falcons' official team website. “One of the things I like best about Matt is every quarterback I've ever worked with, they can all tell you what they like. What Matt can do – he did it when I was here the first time – he tells you what he doesn’t like and why. Just one of the things I’ve learned over the years is I might think something is the greatest idea known to man, if the quarterback doesn’t like it, it’s probably not going to go on Sunday. I think Matt will always have a huge impact on what our final game plan is when we get to that point in the season.”

Since Koetter left the Falcons in 2014, he was named the Buccaneers' offensive play-caller in 2015 before earning Tampa Bay's head-coaching job the following season.

The 60-year-old spent three seasons at the helm for the Bucs, going just 19-29 and posting back-to-back five-win campaigns in 2017 and 2018 before getting fired.

The Falcons are coming off of a 2018 season in which they went just 7-9 and did not look particularly competitive at any one point. They also missed the playoffs for the first time since 2015.
