As the Atlanta Falcons began their training camp on Monday, they got Keanu Neal and Ricardo Allen. At the same time, the Falcons lost JJ Wilcox for 2019.

According to Ian Rapoport, safety JJ Wilcox tore his ACL and is out for the 2019 season. Wilcox suffered the injury during Atlanta's first training camp practice on Monday.

This offseason, the Falcons signed Wilcox to be the team's third safety on the roster. Before coming to Atlanta, Wilcox played with the Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers, Indianapolis Colts, and New York Jets.

Wilcox began his career with the Cowboys, where he accumulated 156 solo tackles, five interceptions, and 15 pass deflections in four seasons. Most recently, the veteran safety spent the 2018 season with the Colts and the Jets.

Although Wilcox rarely took the field with either team last year, failing to garner many stats, Atlanta saw him as a valuable piece to its defense this offseason.

In 2018, Atlanta had a plethora of injuries, especially in the secondary. Both Keanu Neal and Ricardo Allen both suffered season-ending injuries that were crucial to the secondary struggling last year.

Nonetheless, both Neal and Allen took the practice field and are looking healthy. The Falcons signed Wilcox to bring depth to their safety position.

Currently, Sharrod Neasman may be asked to step into a larger role in the defense with Wilcox's season-ending injury. The Falcons could also look into free agency to sign a safety who can assume the same role Wilcox was expected to have.

Dan Quinn and the Falcons had problems with injuries to their safeties in 2018 and are starting 2019 with an injury to Wilcox to start training camp.
