Actress and former American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino made her celebrated return to her hometown of High Point, North Carolina on Juneteenth weekend and was honored at the Celebrating Juneteenth Welcome Home Celebration. During the event, the award-winning R&B singer made sure to rep for her sorority Sigma Gamma Rho as she was seen doing one of the organization’s strolls and sporting blue and white Nikes.

“Now I had on heels, but I figured that was too cute to come home. So I put on my blue and whites for my SGRhos,” Barrino said in a video obtained by HBCU Pulse.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was established on November 12, 1922, in Indianapolis, Indiana, at Butler University by seven educators: Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian Irene White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, Bessie Mae Downey Rhoades Martin, and Cubena McClure.
The organization obtained national collegiate sorority status on December 30, 1929, with the chartering of the Alpha chapter at Butler University. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. stands out as the sole sorority in the NPHC not originating at Howard University and the only sorority established at a predominantly white institution.
The organization has more than 100,000 members across the United States and internationally. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. boasts 500+ chapters in the US, Bahamas, Bermuda, Virgin Islands, Canada, Germany, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, and a newly established chapter in Tokyo, Japan.
Fantasia was announced as an honorary member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated in November 2022. In a video of her celebrating her membership, she spoke about how much being a part of the organization meant to her.
“I’ve been through a lot,” Barrino said in November 2022. “[I] got a testimony. God gave it to me all over again. I’ve always wanted to be a part of a sisterhood. I thought I wanted to be a part until I met y’all. Like I love what you support and I love what you do and I won’t disappoint you I promise.”
Fantasia Barrino-Taylor gained fame by winning the third season of American Idol. Her remarkable voice and natural talent resonated with audiences worldwide.
Following her American Idol victory in 2004, Fantasia launched her first album “Free Yourself,” achieving platinum status. She has since delivered numerous hit albums and singles, securing various Grammy nominations and awards. Beyond music, Fantasia has carved out a successful acting career, gracing Broadway stages in productions like “The Color Purple” and appearing on TV series such as “American Dreams” and “Empire.”
She recently made her feature film debut in the 2023 adaptation of The Color Purple and was acclaimed for her role as Celie Harris-Johnson. She is also an HBCU student, having enrolled at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio.
