Netflix has just announced the new actors joining the live-action One Piece second season, Variety exclusively reported.
Daniel Lasker, a Zimbabwean actor who starred in the Max series Raised by Wolves will be playing Mr. 9, Camrus Johnson of The CW’s Batwoman is Mr. 5, South African Jazzara Jaslyn of Netflix’s Warrior will play Miss Valentine and Late Night With the Devil star and Veb from Ant-Man David Dastmalchian is taking on the role of Mr. 3.
The new characters come directly from the One Piece manga by Eiichiro Oda and the long-running anime adaptation, as members of the criminal organization Baroque Works.
The first season of Netflix’s hit live-action adaptation starred Iñaki Godoy as the wanna-be pirate king Monkey D. Luffy, together with his Straw Hat crew, Mackenyu as Roronia Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp and Taz Skylar as Sanji. The main cast are all returning to reprise their roles.
Meet the Baroque Works officer agents
Mr. 9 is a Frontier Agent and Baroque Works bounty hunter. He is currently married to Miss Monday (no announcement of the casting yet). He’s very self-confident and loyal to his friends. According to the manga, he has a heroic side to him even though he does work for a crime syndicate. However, that’s balanced with his superiority complex and attempts to look and act like a prince.
He’s the only one of the four who didn’t ingest a Devil Fruit so he has no “superhuman” abilities. However, he does use two steel bats as weapons and uses them with his acrobatic skills. Mr. 9 also hides steel ropes inside the bats and uses them to subdue his opponents.
Mr. 5 is the lowest-ranked officer agent in Baroque with his partner Miss Valentine. Like most Baroque Works officer agents, he is very confident in himself and views friendship as a sign of weakness. However, he is respectful of Miss Valentine unlike their colleagues. Gem has a short temper and has no patience for practical jokes.
What is the Devil Fruit?
His powers are derived from his ingesting the Devil Fruit Bomu Bomu no Mi, giving him the ability to create strong explosions from his own body without damaging himself. This also makes him immune to explosions. Mr. 5 also uses his South Blue pistol for his Breeze Breath Bomb, breathing into the flintlock’s chambers and then firing the rounds into his opponent.
Miss Valentine is a Baroque Works officer agent and Mr. 5’s partner. Again, quite overconfident, she hardly takes her opponents seriously and always tries to diffuse situations with a lighthearted laugh. She lets Mr. 5 do the talking most of the time. She has a preference for unnecessary cruelty and hates being ignored. Miss Valentine has little in the way of combat ability and relies on her powers derived from eating the Devil Fruit Kiro Kiro no Mi Devil Fruit. This gives her the power to manipulate her body weight.
She uses this ability to attack by making herself heavy enough to crush her opponents or light enough to glide through the air using her umbrella. With her partner, Mr. 5, she rides the force of his explosion and then drop high, increasing her weight when she dive-bombs.
Mr. 3 is an officer agent of Baroque Works with his partner Miss Goldenweek (no casting announcement yet). He believes that’s he’s a master strategist and uses his intellect and total lack of scruples to execute a plan. However, when he’s back to a corner fighting for his life, he’s a bit of a coward. He has a sadistic streak, torturing people by turning them into human sculptures. When he fights, he prefers to trap his opponents’ body parts with abilities he gained from ingesting the Devil Fruit Doru Doru no Mi, which allows him to craft various weapons, tools, and other constructs out of wax.
One Piece’s Straw Hat crew still headed to the Arabasta Kingdom?
With the Baroque Works officer agents cast, it’s safe to assume that at least their part in the Arabasta Arc will be one of the main — if not the main — points in the second season. It’s not known yet if Jamie Lee Curtis will be successful in her quest to be cast as Dr. Kureha, or if Smoker and Tony Tony Chopper will make an appearance.
One Piece was renewed for a second season September last year. As for its release date, it’s still up in the air with “some time in 2025” the usual refrain since with the dual strikes last year filming will most likely end in January 2025.
