Dave Gettleman, the general manager of the New York Giants, has given the media some interesting tidbits this offseason. During the week of the NFL Combine, Gettleman admitted that he's been ‘wrong' on refusing in-season contract extensions in his career.

“Since I became a GM, philosophically I've been against doing contracts in-season,” Gettleman said via Ralph Vacchiano of SNY. “That's wrong. I'm wrong about that and we have to have the money to do it then as well.”

Following a dismal 2019 season, the Giants could be a team that is active in free agency. But with Gettleman's recent comments, New York could preserve some money for extensions in the upcoming season.

In the 2020 season, Evan Engram and Jabrill Peppers are two notable names that are playing in the final years of their contract. With that in mind, the Giants could choose to use the fifth-year option on either of those players.

At the same time, New York could choose to begin extension talks with Engram and Peppers during the 2020 season. As a result, the Giants could be less active in free agency this year than some fans believe they could be.

Last offseason, Landon Collins departed in free agency to the Washington Redskins after spending four years in New York. One of the reasons he left the Giants was due to Gettleman not speaking to him about an extension while the 2018 season was progressing.

Now, Gettleman has seemingly learned his lesson and is willing to do business with his players amid the regular season. But the Giants undoubtedly need to make sure the time and money are right before confirming an extension.
