The New York Giants have ushered in some significant changes in the midst of their rebuild this offseason. It seems linebacker Alec Ogletree could be among the casualties that are on their way out this offseason.

The Giants will need to clear some cap space if they hope to address a n umber of voids on their roster before the 2020 NFL season. ESPN's Jordan Raanan has Ogletree as one of their prime candidates to be cut.

Ogletree is slated to be the NFL's fourth-highest-paid inside linebacker this season behind Bobby Wagner (Seahawks), Kwon Alexander (49ers) and C.J. Mosley (Jets). But he's nowhere near that class. There was a reason the Rams were so eager to trade him several years back. Ogletree had a 52.7 grade in coverage this season, per Pro Football Focus. That has him buried in the bottom half of the league among inside linebackers. It appears likely the Giants will get out of the remaining two years of this deal, despite Ogletree providing a veteran presence as a team captain

The prospect of the New York parting ways with Ogletree certainly does not seem far-fetched given his high price tag and modest production. Although he has emerged as the vocal leader on the defensive side of the ball, it does not provide them with very much bang for their buck with his $11.75 million cap-hit in 2020.

The Giants acquired Ogletree and a seventh-round pick from the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a fourth-round pick prior to the 2018 campaign. Cutting him would add $8.25 million, however, they would also be forced to eat $3.5 million in dead cap. It may be a necessary cost if general manager David Gettleman hopes to kickstart their grueling rebuild.
