The New York Giants are adding some depth to their linebacking corps signing former first-round pick Deone Bucannon the team announced on Tuesday.

From the Giants team website:

In six seasons, Bucannon, who played collegiately at Washington State, has played in 75 regular-season games with 56 starts. His career totals include 395 tackles (302 solo); 7.0 sacks; and two interceptions, including one he returned 29 yards for a touchdown in 2015; 12 passes defensed; seven forced fumbles; and five fumble recoveries. Bucannon also had 14 tackles (seven solo) in three postseason games for the Cardinals.

Bucannon was selected 27th overall in the 2014 draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He played five games this year for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers including a game against the Giants before he was released on October 9th.

Signing with the Giants allows Bucannon to reunite with James Bettcher who was his linebacker coach and defensive coordinator from 2014-17.

After Bucannon's rookie deal expired after the 2018 season he signed a one year with the Buccaneers. The team decided he didn't fit into their plans and released him.

Who knows how much of a boost to the defense Bucannon will actually be, but the Giants should try anything in their power to make moves that might help turn it around. The Giants defense overall has been terrible giving up 388.4 yards per game which rank 28th in the league.

The offense hasn't done the defense many favors with the turnovers but the hope is that Bucannon can come in and provide a spark to the defense.

The Giants next game is against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
