The New York Giants are in desperate need of some help on the defensive side of the ball. And they apparently already have a big-time target in their sights to help with that.

According to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY, the Giants are expected to “aggressively pursue” linebacker Kyle Van Noy once free agency begins on March 18.

New York feels confident in its ability to land Van Noy because he and new Giants head coach Joe Judge spent some time together with the New England Patriots.

Van Noy, who played his collegiate football at BYU, was originally selected by the Detroit Lions in the second round (40th pick overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Injuries derailed Van Noy's rookie campaign. He underwent core muscle surgery and played in just eight games that year, logging six tackles. The following season, Van Noy was relegated to the role of backup, and he finished with 10 tackles and a sack.

Then, midway through 2016, the Lions traded Van Noy to the Patriots. And over the course of that season, he totaled 52 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.

The 28-year-old became a full-time starter for New England in 2017 and delivered, registering 73 tackles and 5.5 sacks. He continued to improve in 2018, recording 92 tackles, 3.5 sacks, a forced fumble, a couple of fumble recoveries and a defensive touchdown. This past season, Van Noy posted 56 tackles, 6.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, a pair of fumble recoveries and a defensive score.

After cutting Alec Ogletree, the Giants can certainly use a linebacker. And Van Noy could end up being the perfect fit for Big Blue's 3-4 defensive scheme.
