New York Giants star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has continued to make progress in his recovery from a surgically-repaired left ankle that he suffered last October.

However, the Giants have decided to take the precautionary route with the 25-year-old by holding him out of action in the preseason opener on Thursday night against the Cleveland Browns, according to Josina Anderson of ESPN.

This shouldn't come as much of a surprise given that the Giants are hoping to have Beckham Jr. back on the field to begin the 2018 regular season. There is no rush to get him back on the field before he's ready to do so as it could create a possible setback in his recovery. He has been able to make continued progress in his rehab that has seen him move past the medical limitations on the practice field that has seen his complete participation.

New York has their focus on having him ready to go at full strength in order to see him return to playing at an elite level. Prior to the injury, he had established himself as one of the top wide receivers in the league that was producing at a record-breaking pace that saw him become the first player in NFL history to notch at least 90 catches for 1,300 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns in each of his first three campaigns in the league. He was well on his way to adding another similarly productive season in 2017 before suffering a broken ankle.

The decision to keep Beckham Jr. off the field shouldn't draw any type of concern as it was likely part of the plan to keep him on track to be o the field for Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 9. It is a situation that should continue to be monitored closely by the Giants over the next few weeks of the preseason.
