Before the Memphis Grizzlies' final game against the Golden State Warriors, veteran guard Mike Conley gave a brief speech, which ended with “I'll see you next season.” After the game, he admitted that it felt weird:

The Grizzlies are on their way to a full rebuild. They already traded Marc Gasol to the Toronto Raptors back in February and almost traded Conley before the trade deadline as well. The Detroit Pistons and Utah Jazz showed interest in him, but negotiations fell through because Memphis wasn't satisfied with the offers.

Conley was part of the Grizzlies' Grit and Grind era that peaked earlier this decade. Unfortunately, they weren't able to get past the Western Conference Finals. As teams like the Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, and Oklahoma City Thunder emerged, Memphis wasn't able to catch up and eventually fell behind in terms of competition.

Now, the Grizzlies are looking forward to the future. They have young players with tremendous upside, and Conley is likely not part of their long-term future. It is expected that the team will once again look to trade him this summer, or before next season's trade deadline.

So, even if Mike Conley promised the fans he'll see them next season, they already know he might not be with the team when the Grizzlies usher in a new era.
