It seems Miami Heat small forward Derrick Jones Jr. is gearing up for a breakout season in 2019-20.

With the Heat failing to make the playoffs, Jones make it a point to improve his game in the offseason. And in an interview with Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the 22-year-old high flyer says he wants to come back in 2019-20 with a brand new game that no one has ever seen before.

“I'm trying to come back next season with a game that no one has seen before,” Jones said. “I'm really just working on everything in my game, pick-and-rolls, my shot, just different decision making on the floor, just getting to the rim.”

Jones averaged 7.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest in the 2018-19 campaign. He played in 60 games and started in 14, but he is expected to make a big jump next year after what could be said as an impressive year.

He and Bam Adebayo are already seen as the future of the Heat, and Jones acknowledged that they have to step up next year and show that they are ready to take over the franchise after Miami icon Dwyane Wade retired.

“I mean, they've already labeled us the young core,” Jones added. “It's our time to step up and show that we're going to go out there and do whatever it takes.”

The Heat are far from competing with the elite teams that currently call the Eastern Conference home. However, with Jones and several other young players ready to make the leap in Miami, perhaps they can make some more noise than initially expected next season
