Hungary and Switzerland will face off in the second matchup for Group A after Germany and Scotland begin the tournament on Thursday. Marco Rossi leads Hungary, a manager who helped the team reach the Euro tournament twice since he took the helm in 2018. They'll face Switzerland, a team that finished second in their group in qualifying behind Romania. Switzerland upset France in Euro 2021, helping them advance past the Round of 16 to the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Hungary only made the knockout stage at the Euro tournament two times in their history. It is time to continue our Euro 2024 odds series with a Hungary-Switzerland prediction, pick, and how-to-watch.

Hungary advanced to Euro 2024 thanks to a less-than-strong qualifying group. They outlasted Serbia to win the group but didn't face any tests like they would in this tournament. Hungary's greatest strength is the man at the top of their formation. Dominik Szoboszlai generated four goals and 3.50 shots per/90 in qualifying, but the depth of Hungary's attack had a severe drop-off after the big trigger-man.

Switzerland has plenty of confidence entering this tournament after advancing to the quarterfinals in 2021. It's no easy feat to defeat France at the Euro tournament, and Switzerland gave fans one of the top moments in 2021 with the victory. Switzerland suffered a small setback when they lost their qualifying group to Romania. However, their underlying metrics show that Switzerland could cause more upsets in 2024.

Why Hungary Will Win

Switzerland had some problems with defending crosses in qualifying. A crucial loss to Romania caused them to finish second in the group, where the Romanians took the ball out wide and exploited their cross-defending flaws. Hungary doesn't offer a lot of offense, but Szoboszlai can alter his offensive tactics to exploit matchups. Hungary won't be afraid to play out wide against Switzerland to get them into crossing situations.

Why Switzerland Will Win

One of Switzerland's strengths is their ability to counterattack off of missed possessions by the opponent. They can smother teams who lack offensive depth, paving the way for a good game against Hungary in this matchup. If the Swiss can shut down Szoboszlai, there won't be much offense generated for Hungary. The Hungarians struggle with counterattacking teams, as they allowed the fifth-most counterattacking shots/90 in qualifying.

Hungary benefitted from a weak group in qualifying, and they looked good in mostly positive game situations. We haven't seen them face much adversity through qualifying, and a quick goal from the Swiss in this game could turn ugly for Hungary.

Final Hungary-Switzerland Prediction & Pick

Switzerland's defensive issues will rear their head later in the tournament when they play better offensive teams. However, the Hungarians don't have enough firepower to solve whichever elite goalkeeper in Yann Sommer or Gregor Kodel plays for the Swiss. Switzerland's underlying metrics show they are a dark horse for this tournament, as they had 2.55 expected goals per 90 minutes in qualifying. Switzerland will take care of Hungary easily in this game if they manage to get through early, thanks to a favorable tactical matchup. The health of Szoboszlai is also a concern, as he left Hungary's last friendly on June 8th with an undisclosed injury. He'll play but may not be 100%.
