The New York Jets have possibly brought aboard the quarterback of the future with the selection of former USC standout Sam Darnold with the third overall pick in this year's draft. This has quickly ignited talk about when he will be put in the position of playing for the starting job this upcoming season.

New York has already acknowledged that he could win the spot outright at some point during the offseason if he proves that he can handle that massive responsibility. With that in mind, former Jets great and Hall of Famer Curtis Martin has voiced that Darnold should start if he shows that he's the best option the team has under center, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.

At this current juncture, New York has four quarterbacks under contract with the presence of last year's starter Josh McCown, backup Christian Hackenberg, and offseason addition Teddy Bridgewater alongside Darnold. Each of these other players has hopes of proving that they are worthy of getting a shot at the starting job but realistically it may just come down to whether the 20-year-old shows enough in training camp.

The Jets don't appear to be in any rush to push him into the starting role as the team could lean on McCown being the starter given his previous experience and what he displayed last season when given the opportunity. It is obviously going to become Darnold's job at some point in the near future but that is on him to show that he is ready to take the helm and all that comes with it.

In essence, it's just a matter of time before he grabs ahold of that starting spot where he will have a chance to lead the team back to relevancy in the NFL.
