After making history in the New York Jets’ 23-16 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, running back Frank Gore could be done for the 2020 season and possibly his NFL career.

Jets head coach Adam Gase revealed that the 37-year-old veteran will not play in the team’s season finale against the New England Patriots on Sunday, per Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.

While it is uncertain if Gore will return next season and for which team, he will end the 2020 season with exactly 16,000 rushing yards in his career over 16 seasons, joining Walter Payton and Emmitt Smith as the only players to reach that number.

Against the Browns, the five-time Pro Bowler rushed for 48 yards on 14 carries to reach the 16,000-yard mark and help New York win its second straight game against a playoff contender after beating the Los Angeles Rams in Week 15, 23-20,  for their first win.

Gore was a third-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2005 NFL Draft. He then spent his first 10 seasons in San Francisco before playing for the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and then the Jets. The veteran has 653 rushing yards this season on 187 carries with two touchdowns while playing in all 15 games.

With 3,985 career receiving yards to his name, Frank Gore has a total of 19,985 yards from scrimmage over the course of his career, which places him fourth on the all-time list next to Jerry Rice, Smith, and Payton.

Without their veteran running back, the Jets will try to close out their season with three consecutive wins after a disastrous 0-13 start.
